Dear St. Elizabeth Seton Parishioners,

As we enter week two of the renovation of our church, I am happy to report that construction is moving forward with much of the demolition work completed. Week one highlighted why the renovation is an important part of our Golden Jubilee. After 50 years, our parish worship space needed corrections in electrical and structural systems that were not visible until work began. Today we are making the improvements that will carry our parish safely into the future.

As with any construction project, expecting the unexpected is a sound rule of thumb. We did not find any hidden treasures, no historic icons, but found an incredible team of laborers who have shown both respect and gratitude for working in the church. As for surprises, there were a few. We discovered the choir area once had three small risers. These would not accommodate more than 10 people. Under the baptismal font, the flooring was once wood and not elevated as it has been in recent years. This foundation had disintegrated and become unstable.

Sincere thanks to the parishioners who have respected the “Do not Enter” and “Construction and Hard Hat Zone” signage. The terms of our Building Permit dictate the safety of the work side and each of us has an obligation to adhere to the rules and regulations. Your safety as well as the safety of the laborers is key to a successful renovation project. We have implemented a safety program that includes wearing hard hats, safety glasses, ear plugs, and close-toed shoes. (Yes, this means no flip flops.)

As we enter week two, progress continues as we prepare for the construction framing and pouring concrete for the sanctuary and interior ramp and rebuilding the exterior ramp. More dumpsters will be on site as the existing carpeting is removed by the flooring contractor, and the restrooms are demolished. We have a long journey ahead of us, but with prayers, the intercession of our patroness, St. Elizabeth Seton, and all of you, we will be faithful disciples as we patiently await our Jubilee renovations.

Thank you!

In Christ,
Dr. Kathleen Goeppinger
